- Scrutiny. The common current definition of the word, the one we're most familiar and the basis for the way we use the word is "a critical observation or examination." When we scrutinize something, we mean to examine it closely and thoroughly, very carefully in depth and detail. But words have history. The word scrutiny is derived from the Latin word scruta meaning "rubbish." Thus, when it was born, the word scrutiny meant "sort through rubbish." It's something we all have to do. The residents of Harrisburg and the Dauphin County have a lot on their plates with scrutinizing the actions of the Thompson Administration, the suggestions of the Act 47 team, the decisions of the Harrisburg Parking Authority, and the campaign finances of our elected officials.
